Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked questions about artillery friction primers.

What are artillery friction primers?
Artillery friction primers are small ignition device used to fire cannons, primary in the 18th and 19th centuries. they played a crucial role in the operation of muzzle-loading artillery, particularly in military setting like the American civil war.

How a Friction Primer Works:
A friction primer consists of a brass tube filled with a fine gunpowder compound. Inside the tube is a wire with a roughened or serrated end and coated with a friction-sensative propriety blend. This wire passes through the tube and forms a loop at the end.
Pulling the wire through the tube causes friction and ignites the charge in the tube and produces a flame that shoots through the vent hole and ignites the black powder charge.
