Artillery Gimlet
$50.00
This artillery vent clearing tool consisted of a heavy iron wire fitted with a wooden t-handle on one end and a threaded screw point on the other. It was designed specifically for clearing the vent of an artillery tube.
The screw end was used to engage and remove broken friction primers, fragments, or other obstructions that could become lodged in the vent after firing. Keeping the vent clear was essential to the safe and reliable operation of the gun, making this simple tool an important part of the artillery crew’s equipment.
Though basic in construction, the vent clearing tool provided the gun crew with a practical means of maintaining the vent and keeping the piece ready for continued service.
